Hi my name is Crystal and I am ready to UPSET educational systems! Have you started to question why education is still running on the same systems that past generations have been running on? If so, you are not alone. With Science of Reading, Thinking Classrooms, and trauma-informed education being topics of discussion, I believe educators are starting to question the status quo. The seeds of better are being planted!
These past few years, education has been turned upside down! Our schools need more support with emotional regulation, outside the box instruction, and more student ownership. We live in a digital world and our curriculums offer scripted learning.
A few things to plant:
- Where can I offer students voice and choice within their academic day?
- Explicit instruction is necessary and choice is needed, so how can I incorporate choice in learning?
- LEGOs, Coding, Book Creator, Nearpod, Problem-Based Learning, Content-based lyrics to current music
This is a start to the seed planting of change. I may not be able to change the entire educational system in America, but I can start with the changes within my community. As we dive into your small class community, ask the question “What can I change now?”. Start with the small seed of asking students questions like, what do you want to learn about (blank) topic?, how do you want to show me you have learned about (blank) topic?, what manipulative do we have in the classroom that will help with understanding the math concept?, and any other questions that will flip the script on teaching straight from a manual. You’ve got this! Small changes lead to big results.

We are planting seeds and cultivating a new harvest for our students! It takes a village of people coming together to replace the root system. We are powerful in community ♥️
